Coach Josh Thompson
Varsity Head Coach
Coach Thompson has been the Bishop McGuinness Varsity Head Coach since 2004.
He began his coaching career as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Bartlett Yancey High school, from 1998-2000. He then went on to serve as student assistant/manager at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2000-01, where he was a part of the team that won the Southern Conference Tournament Championship and advanced to the first round of the 2001 NCAA tournament.
Following his time at UNCG, Coach Thompson was hired as the Assistant Varsity Boy's Basketball Coach at Oak Ridge Military Academy where he was the top assistant on the staff that was selected as Triad Athletic Conference Coaching Staff of the Year. He helped lead the team to a 17-6 record, the TACIS Conference Championship, and a NCISAA 2A Final Four Appearance.
Coach Thompson came to Bishop McGuinness in 2002 as the Head JV Boy's Basketball Coach and was an assistant on the Varsity from 2002-04. In his first year as JV Head coach, he turned around a team that previously went 2-20 and coached the same team to an 11-11 record. In his second year, the JV team won the PACIS Conference Championship, posting a 16-9 record.
2004 marked Coach Thompson's first year as Varsity Head Coach at Bishop McGuinness. In only his fifth season as head coach of the Villains, Coach Thompson led the program to its first ever NCHSAA State Championship title and the best season in Bishop history. The 2009 Bishop Boys finished 31-2 overall and an unprecendented 16-0 in conference play. Coach Thompson was named 2009 Northwest Confererence Coach of the Year, 2009 Greensboro News and Record Coach of the Year, and 2009 Triad Sports Report's Forsyth County Co-Coach of the Year. In 2019, Coach Thompson won his second NCHSAA State Title as head coach of the Villains during a magical playoff run that saw the #9 seeded Villains win their last 4 games in the state tournament by a total of 10 points. In 2019 Coach Thompson was named the Winston Salem Journal All-Northwest Coach of the Year. In 2022, Coach was Honorable Mention Greensboro News and Record Coach of the Year.
In 2023, Coach Thompson was named Northwest Piedmont Coach of the Year. In 2024, Coach was also named Northwest Piedmont Coach of the Year for the second straight season after leading the Villains to another undefeated regular season and conference tournament championship.
As of 2024, Coach Thompson has won over 350 games as head coach of the Varsity Villains.
In addition to his time as a high school and college experience, Coach Thompson has coached for the North Carolina Gaters and Greensboro Warriors AAU associations. He was a part of the North Carolina Gaters 2004 19U Coaching Staff whose team advanced to the National Championship game and a Runner-Up Finish at the 2004 AAU National Tournament.
In 2009, Coach Thompson started his own youth basketball organization which has become one of North Carolina's premier grassroots basketball organizations- the North Carolina Spartans.

Coach Thompson also runs runs his own annual basketball camps at Bishop since 2004. In 2010, Coach was published for the first time in Dan Inham's A System of Success: State Champions Basketball Playbook, and in 2015 for a second time in Xs, Os, & Ws: Inspirational Stories from Successful Basketball Coaches by Expected End Entertainment.
Coach Thompson holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise and Sport Science and a Master's degree in Education, both from UNC-Greensboro.
In 2014, the boys basketball program and Coach Thompson were featured on the CBS Evening News 'On The Road' with Steve Hartman and on ESPN E:60 with Tom Rinaldi.
Coach Thompson is a member of the North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association (NCBCA), the National High School Basketball Coaches Association (NHSBCA), and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).
In 2015, Coach Thompson received certification as a USA Basketball Licensed Coach. In 2017, Coach Thompson was a featured guest on The Hardwood Hustle Basketball Podcast. In 2019, Coach Thompson was named Head Coach of the west team for the 2020 Triad All Star Classic game.
In 2022-23, the Villains program was featured in a YouTube series entitled 'Beyond the Baseline'.
Coach Thompson resides in Kernersville with his wife Marsha, son Aaron, and daughter Anna.

Ryan Haidinger
Coach Haidinger has been with the Bishop Basketball program since 2017. Coach Haidinger played college basketball at Forsyth Tech Community College before moving on to UNC-Greensboro where he received his Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. During his time at UNCG, he began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Reagan High School in Forsyth County. Shortly thereafter, Coach Haidinger had coaching stints at Forsyth Country Day, Triad Titans AAU, and at North Davidson High School. Throughout the past ten years, Coach Haidinger has worked at several of the top NCAA basketball camps throughout the country including Michigan State, Notre Dame, Tennessee, and Duke University. Coach Haidinger's duties include defensive coordinator, scouting, and on court coaching with a focus on the post players.
Michael Herschel
Coach Herschel has been assistant varsity coach with the Bishop Basketball program since 2015. Coach Herschel played on the last Bishop freshman team in 2005 and then was named a captain of the Villains for his junior and senior seasons from 2007-2009. He played under Coach Josh Thompson for those two years and was a member of the 2009 NCHSAA 1A State Championship team (his 2009 team is also currently tied for highest team cumulative GPA in the program’s history). Michael went on to attend UNC-Wilmington where he would earn his bachelors in business administration. It was also at UNCW that he found opportunities to coach. In 2011, he coached the boys team at St. Mark Catholic Middle School where he put together a winning season and then took over the traditionally strong girls program the next year. His teams for the next two seasons went undefeated in regular season and conference tournament play. While in Wilmington, he coached with the Wilmington Hurricanes AAU organization and upon moving back to the Triad, he coached under Coach Money with the NC Spartans. Before joining the Bishop staff, he was a coach for one of Bishop’s feeder schools Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Coach Herschel's duties include scouting, on court coaching, substitutions, assistant to the parent ambassador, and media relations.
Coach Herschel is also a three-time Bishop Basketball Camp championship coach.

Adrian Mills
Adrian Mills finished High School Basketball as co-captain and a career highlighted by captaining the JV team to a State title and representing his state at the Australian School Boys Basketball Championships. He finished his playing career with the Melbourne Tigers Junior program in Australia. Coach Mills received a double degree from Deakin University in Applied Science and Secondary Education then moved to the US in 2003 while on cultural exchange was assistant coach at Knox Middle School. Since 2006 Adrian has coached Boys and Girls Basketball at China Grove Middle School, becoming the Head Coach for the boys program in 2019 after 4 years as Head JV coach . He has also coached Football since 2006 winning the Championship in 2010 with an undefeated season. In 2017 Coach Mills joined the PGC staff as a Basket Instructor and in 2019 became a Coach trainer. He is a member of Key5 Coaching and Essential-Coaching. Coach Mills serves as the director for the Lead Em Up program for Bishop Boys Basketball.
